Meganisi Island, Lefkada

Meganisi is a picturesque island in the Ionian Sea, four nautical miles southeast of Lefkada. It is the largest of a group of islands — Scorpios, Scorpidi, Thilia, Kithros and more — called the Televoides, an administrative part of the Municipality of Meganisi (Taphion). It covers 19.85 sq.km and belongs to the prefecture of Lefkada. It has three picturesque villages — Vathi, Katomeri and Spartochori — with a total population of around 2,000 inhabitants.

The traditional architecture, the friendly people, the peaceful life, the picturesque harbours with fish tavernas, the enchanting views and the crystal-clear sea create an ideal setting for holidays. Agios Ioannis, Spilia bay, Ampelakia, Atherinos and Limonari are the island's best-known beaches, while the Papanicoli and Giovani caves are worth a visit.

There is regular transportation from Nidri, 16 km south of the town of Lefkada. Meganisi is four nautical miles from Nidri and one nautical mile from Scorpios. The connection is made by: ferry boat (regular routes Nidri–Meganisi from 7:00 a.m.), the Anchialos speedboat (daily routes from Lefkada town) and sea taxi.

There are also daily routes to Ithaca and Kefalonia — an enchanting 25-minute journey among small islands, including Madouri (with Valaoritis' old mansion) and Scorpios, owned by the Onassis family.

The island has a good road network and local transport, hotels, rooms and apartments to let, a marina and many natural harbours. You can also enjoy local boat tours by sea taxi to Papanicoli cave and around Meganisi.
