The Passive House is the world's benchmark standard for building energy efficiency. A Passive House requires roughly 10% of the energy used by typical Central European buildings — up to 90% energy savings. Passive houses require less than 15 kWh/(m²·yr) for heating/cooling, primary energy use capped at 120 kWh/(m²·yr), airtightness with air changes ≤ 0.6/h, excellent insulation with U < 0.35 W/m²K, high-performance frames with U < 1.4 W/m²K, and passive solar and solar-thermal hot water systems. Applying these principles, architectural proposals have been designed for the Meganisi properties, without being binding for investors.
